Testing & Standards

What is Common Core?

Simply put, Common Core Standards are the concepts that students need to be learning, separated into grade levels, in order to arrive at their high school graduation with the knowledge and skills to successfully move into college or the workplace. The standards have been adopted by 45 states creating a consistent expectation of student achievement across our country.

Will the curriculum change?

As in the past, your Advisory Teacher will guide you as you teach your student, making the small adaptations and changes in our current curriculum to reflect alignment with Common Core Standards. But more, importantly, your AT will be challenging you, as always, to look for ways to increase and connect their understanding with real life.

How does Common Core affect homeschoolers?

With Common Core, homeschooling families have a wonderful opportunity to shine. Traditional teachers have a very limited amount of time and personal knowledge to help their students make those deep connections between what they are studying and the application to real life. Homeschoolers can take advantage of the dinner table or time in the car or any of the everyday life situations to look for and make those connections.

What can we do?

The best homeschooling practice is when all of life becomes “school”, not just the time sitting down with the textbooks. Being with your student 24/7 affords you the opportunity to teach and learn beyond the limited box of school hours. Actively engaging in the process of learning as a family will lead to student success! Your AT will encourage you to seek out those opportunities to be the best teacher you can be for your student during your “class time” and beyond. We will ALL grow together, which is great education in action!
